Many people would like to serve the Lord, but only as advisors.
Where God calls, He also equips.
Lesson: David, a Leader of Men
Following his crowning as King of Israel, David gathered key leaders around himself. This was a turn-around time for the nation. King Saul had failed miserably as a leader. Some soldiers were still loyal to King Saul, and there were many enemies of Israel in the land who could threaten David at any time. Gathering loyal supporters and capable leaders was top priority. Choosing and preparing leaders is likewise the most important task a pastor of a congregation can undertake. Too often that is left to “Whose turn is it?” or worse, “We are glad if anyone will just do it.” In small churches choosing qualified leaders can be a challenge. It is my opinion that a few good leaders are a better choice than a larger leadership team of unwilling volunteers. If a pastor has two good leaders, the three of them can effectively lead a congregation. A good portion of a pastor’s time should therefore go into recruiting and developing his leaders for the present and the future needs of the church. The more time that a pastor spends with his leaders, the less time he will need to spend with the needs of the congregation. Multiplying his leaders will multiply his effectiveness.
Now Talk About This 1. What kind of lay leaders are needed in our churches today? 2. What do these leaders need most from the pastor?
Now Pray About It
